Declined or Shut Down by Stripe, PayPal or Your Bank?
Here's What to Do Next.
Account closed. Funds held. No clear reason. You're not the first and you won't be the last. Here's how to get processing again, fast, without making it worse.
What should you do if Stripe or PayPal closes your account? Don't open a new account with the same details. Get the reason and fund release date in writing, export your transaction and dispute history, fix your website policies, then apply to a specialist high-risk PSP that accepts your category. ICPay introduces you to one within 48 hours, free.

Why this happens
Stripe, PayPal, Shopify Payments and Square are aggregators. They onboard millions of merchants on one shared risk appetite. If your category, your chargebacks or your website trips their rules, the account goes. Usually without a clear reason, and usually with funds held.
The most common triggers:
- Your category. Gambling, adult, crypto, CBD, peptides, firearms, nutraceutical trials and dating sit on restricted or prohibited lists. Some accounts get approved at signup and closed at the first proper risk review.
- Your dispute ratio. Visa's merchant threshold (VAMP) is 1.5% from April 2026. Mastercard flags merchants at 100+ chargebacks a month and a 1.5% ratio. Aggregators act well before you hit either.
- A sudden volume spike. A big launch or a viral week looks like fraud to an automated model.
- Your website. Missing refund policy, health claims, unclear billing or a product the model can't classify.
What to do in the next 48 hours
- Don't open a new Stripe or PayPal account. Same directors, same bank account, same website gets linked and closed again. It can also make your history look worse to the next underwriter.
- Ask for the reason in writing. You may get a generic answer. Ask anyway. A written reason helps the next PSP underwrite you.
- Export everything now. Transaction history, dispute and refund history, payout reports, and the closure email. A new PSP will want 3 to 6 months of processing history.
- Find out when your funds release. Aggregators commonly hold funds to cover future disputes and refunds. Get the release date and the amount in writing.
- Fix what a specialist PSP will check. Refund, shipping, privacy and terms pages live. No health or earnings claims. Clear billing descriptors.
- Get matched with a PSP that accepts your category. Not another aggregator. A specialist high-risk PSP that underwrites your vertical properly. That's what ICPay does, free.
The MATCH list, explained
MATCH (Member Alert to Control High-Risk Merchants, also called the Terminated Merchant File) is a Mastercard database of merchants terminated by acquirers for reasons like excessive chargebacks or fraud. Being closed by Stripe or PayPal does not automatically put you on it. If you are on it, mainstream acquirers will decline you, but some specialist PSPs will still underwrite you, usually with a higher reserve.
What a specialist PSP will want from you
- Certificate of incorporation and company documents
- Passport and proof of address for directors and beneficial owners
- 3 to 6 months of bank and processing statements
- Your closure email and dispute history
- A website with live terms, privacy and refund policies

FAQs
Why did Stripe close my account with no warning?
Stripe can close accounts it decides present too much risk, including for restricted categories, high dispute ratios or sudden volume spikes. Closures often come with a generic reason and funds held to cover future disputes.
Should I open a new Stripe account?
No. A new account with the same directors, bank account or website is usually linked and closed again, and repeated closures make you harder to underwrite elsewhere.
Am I on the MATCH list because Stripe closed me?
Not automatically. MATCH is a Mastercard database of merchants terminated by acquirers for specific reasons such as excessive chargebacks or fraud. Ask your provider directly if you're unsure.
How fast can I take payments again?
ICPay makes introductions within 48 hours. Specialist PSP onboarding typically takes 5 to 10 business days if your documents are ready.
What does ICPay charge?
Nothing. The PSP pays ICPay a commission after a successful introduction.
